Chapter Six

Kris

When we walk into the bar, Brianna, the bar hand on shift is trying to mop up water.

“I’m sorry Boss,” she says to Haley. “I want to stay and help, but I have to get to Sergio’s. I have a shift starting in ten minutes.”

“Where’s Anthony? He was supposed to be covering for me tonight.”

Briana slaps her hand against her head as she wraps her purse around her body. “Shit, I forgot to tell you. I’m sorry! I got so busy with the water, I forgot to tell you he called off.” She hands me the handle to the mop and heads out the door.

Haley looks towards me, her eyes narrowed. “What the hell?”

“I’m always fixing something at the group house. I think maybe I have a small Shop Vac still in the cab of my truck. You check on that and I’ll turn the water off.”

She lifts her hands to grab the keys I throw, then turns out the door. This bar needs major repairs, it has for years. I hope she got a good deal for the place.

I switch off the water and pull the freezer away from the wall. Right away, I see the ice line has come loose.

The bell hung above the door rings, and the Shop Vac starts up. She’s so self-motivated, so driven to make this place work. It’s impressive.

I connect the loose line and pull open the fridge to check the drain pan—which is also clogged. I then turn the water back on, making sure everything runs fine before making my way into the bar to help Haley finish cleaning up the mess.

I shouldn’t notice how beautiful she looks, but I can’t help myself. She’s tied her hair into a loose bun on top of her head and she’s bent over just slightly as she moves the hose back and forth over the floor of the bar.

“All set,” I say, switching off the Shop Vac to lift the bucket from the canister. I open the door, dump the liquid, and return it to its spot.

“I don’t deserve you,” she says with a touch of sarcasm as she pushes stray hair back from her face. “Let me get you a beer.” There’s a slight moan in her voice when she straightens that I fixate on.

Haley walks behind the bar and grabs two beers from the cooler, pops the tops, then rounds the counter next to me, avoiding the larger puddles of water as she moves.

“How’d things go with Ellie today? She seems sweet as hell.”

I throw back the bottle and shake my head. “She’s great, but I think I scared her off. Women this age want commitment.” I look straight at her. “Well, most women.”

She spins the top of the bottle in place. “I want commitment with the right person, at the right time, when all the stars align… just right… like a Disney movie. I figure that’s how I’ll know.” She smiles.

“Well then, you want it just like everyone else.”

She swigs her beer and tugs at the hair piled on her head.
